THE FORGOTTEN PALACES
Arraba is one of the nicest Palestinian villages, dating back to the Canaanite period (2nd millennium BC) and preserves an archaeological site (Tal Dothan) of that period.
Can be reached with own car or with a reserved taxi, as well as by the buses or multiple taxis from the bus station of Jenin, Nablus, Ramallah, Jerusalem: see home page).
The town had its best splendour in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, when the occupant Ottomans included it among the 24 villages defined as “Throne Villages” to rule out the territory, collect taxes, enforce the law and administer justice on their behalf. A powerful and rich family, Abd Al-Hadi, led the Throne Village of Arraba and many villages in the districts of Jenin and Nablus. They built the 21 elegant buildings of the palace and a mosque in the middle of the town, according to a style followed also by other rich families, creating a downtown with a surprising architectural homogeneity.
